Founded in January 1661 Ivan Franko Lviv National University is one of the oldest in Europe. At the initial stage the students of the University were trained in four specialities: Philisophy, Theology, Law and Medicine. Gradually, new realms and disciplines were being introduced. In the 18th century training in Physics, Geography and Mathematics started. Simultaneously, the humanities were extended to include History as well as German, French and Polish.
In 1848 the Department of the Ukrainian Language and Litertature was set up at the University . It was chaired by Ya. Holovatskyi, an outstanding Ukrainian scholar. Ivan Franko, one of the most distinguished public and literary figures of Ukraine, studied at the faculty of Philosophy in the 1870th.Many prominent scholars of European standing taught at the University, among them philosopher P.Lodiy, petrographer F.Cyrkiel, biologist B.Dubovski, physiciast M.Smoluchowski, mathematicians I.Puzyna and Sbanakh, art scholars, historians and linguists O.Kolessa, M.Voznyak, J.Kyrylowich, I.Sventsits'kyi, R.Ganshiniets, I.Krypiakevych, K.Studyns'kyi, V.Simovych, V.Shchurat.
At the turn of the century (1894-1914) an outstanding historian and creator of the national school of History, Professor M.Hrushevs'kyi headed the Chair of the Ukrainian History at the University. Later he became the first president of Ukraine.
The magnificent main building of the University (the seat of the Halychyna Parliament during the Austrian-Hungarian rule) was constructed in the years 1977-1881. It was designed by I.Hochberger.
The University has a long-standing tradition of prestige. It is an acknowledged center for carrying out research and training specialists in many spheres.
At present, student population amount to 12.000 full-time and part-time studentstrained in 33 scientific, engineering and pedagogical fields. The University is made up of 16 faculties: Biology, Geography, Economics, Journalism, Languages and Litetature, History, International Relations, Philisophy, Mechanics and Methematics, Physics, Chemistry, Law etc.Anually about 1,200 specialists graduate from the University. The complete University course lasts 5 years. The University provides traning for PHD students in 73 spheres, both humanities and scienses. It also runs entrance preparatory courses. The University staff is engaged in academic, research and educational activities. Its library, with a very rich book depository, is one of the biggest in Ukraine. The University staff amounts to 950 teachers and is headed by Ivan Vakarchuk.
